1.
What is life to you It means nothing You destroy, you kill Without a second thought Why do you chop down that tree Why do you kill that little girl I want to be where the sun always shines And where the wind blows through my hair Well down the way from man's violent path If there's a place, well I'll be there. There must be a place There must be a place where we can run There must be a place There must be a place under the sun
2.
What has he done to the balance of nature The rainbow is broken in the eyes of time And in the eyes of the Hopi and Navajo And others oppressed from birth They see the streetlights Instead of the stars above And tears fall on the concrete-covered earth Earth The Sun The Stars The Sky The Great Spirit didn't want the land Dug up to create nuclear weapons And neither did we
3.
I'm a teenage male I am very nice I have a few problems I need a girlfriend She must have a rad body She must have a pretty face She must need sex She must be receptive to my needs In this sea of life Relationship is the boat I sail I need comfort I need problems I met her at a party Or somewhere like that I call her on the phone I can't leave her alone Son of a bitch I have an itch It's on my dick I need somewhere to put it In this sea of life Relationship is the boat I sail I need comfort I need problems I'm a teenage male I am very nice I drive a fast red car I drink beer I'll fight for a girl I'll use my fists To defend my John Thomas From any ill-doings In this sea of life Relationship is the boat I sail I need comfort I need problems No, it's not a surprise It's something most people have Already realized It's common among men It's a dick right up her end It's a releationship deal I know how you must feel -- But I need a relationship right now I need it real bad
4.
What the government gives is a lie They try to label what should be life They organize and categorize They control, control destroy That clock on the wall just sits I'd like to smash it to bits Please mr. businessman go away Please let me live my way Politicians can't set me free With their stupid games, leave me be I see the time in their eyes Hands of a clock formed by their lies That clock on the wall just sits I'd like to smash it to bits Please mr. businessman go away Please let me live my way

Treacherous Jaywalkers
Fourth Demo (AKA “Solar Landing”)

Recorded to Four-Track Cassette
August 23, 1986 at Outhouse (James’ garage), Mar Vista, CA.
Final mix the following week.

1. Solar Landing
2. Broken Rainbow
3. Relationships
4. Smashing Clocks
5. Crucial Truth Pt. 3
6. Reggae Song

In the summer of 1986, when this demo was recorded, I was eighteen years old. It was almost a year before we went into Radio Tokyo to record our debut SST EP Sunrise, which means this was one of the last demos I gave to Mike Watt around the time he said, “I like it, you’re almost ready to record”.

The “fourth demo” was recorded in our practice space, a small, cluttered, converted two-car garage in Mar Vista behind James’ parents’ house. We tried to soundproof it the best we could. Producer Steve Tounsand was a close friend and musical compatriot - see mustardmusic.bandcamp.com/album/re-mustard and the liner notes to treacherousjaywalkers.bandcamp.com/album/treacherous-jaywalkers-malibu-yacht-club-malibu-ca-16-november-1985 - who oversaw all of our early four-track recordings. There may have been plans to release some of these songs officially, but that never happened. This is the first time these recordings have seen the light of day.

This demo is unique in that I think it’s the only recorded collaboration between ourselves and our friend John “Lynn” Seagrave-Smith, a transplanted L.A.-Brit-back-to-L.A. (I actually was never sure where he was from) in the tradition of the classic English political punk bands Discharge and Crass. He had a leather jacket that said “Subhumans” on the back and an English accent. Digging up this tape, listening to the songs for the first time in thirty-five years and hearing his voice was a complete surprise, and reminds me of the importance of going through the old boxes of Treacherous cassettes, if not for myself and my bandmates, at the very least to preserve our little slice of music history.
